STUDENT FLUTE REPAIR

A regularly and well-maintained instrument is a basic requirement for developing playing skills. When practicing with a leaking or poorly tuned flute, the fun of the hobby suffers. A well-maintained flute also retains its value better. If the flute is damaged for some reason, even major damage can be repaired, and home insurance usually covers the repair costs.

Annual maintenance, inspection and adjustment

Annual maintenance is the right next step when the flute is about a year old or has undergone basic maintenance at Huilupiste within about two years. During the annual maintenance, the student flute is thoroughly checked and the mechanism and pads are adjusted to work as well as possible. In addition, other maintenance measures deemed necessary can be carried out during the annual maintenance, such as cleaning, replacing individual pads, dampening material or corks, correcting minor dents, tightening joints, etc. Annual maintenance is an hourly-charged maintenance, the price starts at €98 + supplies. During the annual maintenance, the flute usually needs to be in the workshop for 1-2 working days.

Basic maintenance

Basic maintenance is, as its name suggests, the most typical maintenance procedure for flutes. The maintenance interval for basic maintenance of a student flute depends a lot on the amount of playing and the player, but we typically recommend basic maintenance every 1-5 years. After the first basic maintenance with us, we can recommend a maintenance interval that is right for you. During basic maintenance, the mechanism of the student flute is completely disassembled from the body, the body is washed and all parts including the case are carefully cleaned. Metal parts are lightly polished by hand and the mechanism oils are changed from the inner mechanism. Finally, the mechanism and pads are adjusted to be held with as light a grip as possible. Additional work during basic maintenance can include replacing broken or needing replacement pads, dampening material or other parts, opening the pins if necessary, tightening or repairing joints and repairing various damages. After extensive basic maintenance, the resonance and functionality of the student flute will be better than when new. The price of basic maintenance for a student flute starts at €199 + supplies and additional work. The price of basic maintenance for an open-hole student flute starts at €249 + supplies and additional work. For basic maintenance, the flute usually needs to be in the workshop for 2-3 working days.

Repadding

Repadding of a student flute can also be called full maintenance  of a student flute. If the pads of a student flute are at the end of their service life (usually 4–10 years depending on the number of plays and the pads), it is recommended to pad the student flute. In addition to basic maintenance, padding also includes opening the spokes and replacing all wearing soft parts (pads, felts, dampening material and corks). As an additional work, even major damage to the instrument can be repaired during an overhaul. After this the instrument is better than new in many respects. The price of an repadding starts at €499 for closed hole flutes and €599 for open hole flutes, + supplies. The flute usually needs to be in the workshop for 7 working days for this kind of repair.
